The National Medical Commission (NMC) has deferred the implementation of the revised ratio of MBBS seats until Academic Year (AY) 2025-2026. This notice was issued on November 15, 2023.
It may be recalled that the NMC had notified the Guidelines for Under Graduate Courses under Establishment of New Medical Institutions, Starting of New Medical Courses, Increase of Seats for Existing Courses & Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023 (hereinafter referred to as ‘guidelines‘). These guidelines were notified on August 16, 2023.
The one of the objectives of these guidelines contained a provision that stated that “. . . medical college shall follow the ratio of 100 MBBS seats for 10 lakh population in that state/ U.T.”
Subsequently, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) had decided to re-examine this ratio of 100 MBBS seats. Hence, due to this decision, the NMC has also decided that the “OBJECTIVE” clause under Chapter-1 of these guidelines shall be implemented from academic year 2025-26.
The move to re-examine reflects a proactive approach to address the evolving needs and demands in the field of medical education. The authorities aim to ensure a more equitable distribution of medical education resources, responding to demographic variations and regional requirements.
The decision to implement the revised clause in the academic year 2025-26 indicates a well-thought-out timeline for the transition, allowing for necessary adjustments and preparations.
