The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a public notice on the re-opening the application window for new medical colleges. This announcement is on account of recent deferments made in seat ratio allocation. This public notice was issued on November 16, 2023.

It may be recalled that the NMC had issued a public notice dated, concerning the issuance of new Essentiality Certificates. One of the conditions of that notice was the allocation of 100 MBBS seats for every 10 lakh population in a State/UT.

Subsequently, in a recent decision, the NMC has announced that the “OBJECTIVE” clause under Chapter-1 of the “Guidelines for Undergraduate Courses under Establishment of New Medical Institutions, Starting of New Medical Courses, Increase of Seats for Existing Courses & Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023″ will come into effect from the academic year 2025-26.

Therefore, in continuation of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board’s (MARB) public notice dated 18.08.2023, it has been determined that certain colleges may now submit applications to the NMC. This facility is available only to those colleges/ institutions that were unable to apply for the establishment of new medical colleges or an increase in MBBS seats due to the population-based condition.

Hence, the application window is reopened online. The deadline for submission is set for November 26, 2023. This is subject to the fulfillment of all other applicable conditions.

Additionally, applicants must pay the stipulated application fee along with 18% GST online.

This announcement provides medical colleges an opportunity to re-evaluate their plans for medical education expansion.
