Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has issued a press release on its advances in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning research over the last five years. This press release was issued on December 21, 2023.
The DAE has actively collaborated with renowned academic institutions and spearheaded initiatives focusing on diverse applications of AI and ML technologies. Through these mean, it aims to harness cutting-edge technologies.
Two notable projects that have emerged from this collaboration are the “Robust Shape-based Face Recognition System” and “Robust and Scalable Computer Vision Systems for Smart Multi Camera Video Surveillance.” These projects aim to enhance facial recognition capabilities and bolster video surveillance systems with robust and scalable computer vision technologies.
The DAE, in collaboration with academic partners, has undertaken various projects in AI/ML domains. These include:
- Early Detection of Breast Cancer: Utilizing thermal/infrared imaging for the early detection of breast cancer lesions, with AI applications classifying the mapped lesions.
- Diabetic Eye Disease Detection: Employing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for the detection and classification of diabetic eye diseases.
- Unsupervised Radiation Field Mapping: Implementing AI for unsupervised mapping of radiation fields inside cyclotron vaults.
- Unsupervised Area Surveillance by Drone: Leveraging drone technology for unsupervised area surveillance.
- Indian Sign Language Coder and Decoder: Developing AI applications for coding and decoding Indian Sign Language.
- Video Compression for Low Bit Rate Video Conferencing: Researching video compression techniques for efficient low-bit-rate video conferencing.
- Neutron Gamma Separation for DAQ System: Utilizing AI for the separation of neutron and gamma signals in Data Acquisition (DAQ) systems.
These projects, collectively costing Rs. 180 crores, have seen approximately Rs. 53 crores already utilized.
The integration of AI and ML research with high-performance computing has enabled the processing of vast data volumes, leading to the development of applications across various domains. Notably, advancements in Security and Cyber Security have been realized, with the initiation of AI-based video analytics and Cyber Security tools. Indigenous products, such as the Secured Network Access System (SNAS), have emerged as crucial components, forming the backbone of Cybersecurity.
Given the extensive DAE network generating millions of events daily, the development of Event Monitoring Systems has proven instrumental. These systems, seamlessly integrated with SNAS, operate 24/7, ensuring continuous vigilance and timely insights.
