The Central Government, in consultation with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), has released the energy consumption standards for electric ceiling type fans. The specifications outlined in this announcement are set to apply to all such equipment falling within the scope of IS 374:2019, covering standard sweep sizes and operating on single-phase alternating current supply up to 250V, 50Hz. These standards were published on January 18, 2024.

Under the new standards, electric ceiling type fans are required to meet safety requirements outlined in paragraph 9 of Indian Standard 374:2019, with additional references to paragraph 8 to 32 of Indian Standard 302 (Part 2/Sec 80) as amended from time to time. Furthermore, these fans must comply with all performance requirements specified in Indian Standard 374:2019 and either carry the Bureau of Indian Standards certification mark or have the manufacturer certified as per IS/ISO 9000 or above.

The labeling of electric ceiling type fans will be based on a star rating system, with a maximum of five stars, indicating performance levels from one to five. The rating will be determined by meeting the energy consumption standards and performance requirements set out in the announcement.

Existing models of electric ceiling type fans approved under S.O. 2210 (E) dated 12th May 2022 will remain valid until 31st December 2024. Manufacturers are required to test two samples, following the guidelines of paragraph 18 of IS 374:2019. There will be no negative tolerance for star rating levels, and manufacturers are expected to account for manufacturing tolerances and variations while determining star ratings.

The announcement also specifies rounding-off procedures for values such as power consumption, air delivery, and service value, following Indian Standard 2:1960. Tolerance limits for power factor, fan speed, and power input are established according to sub-paragraphs of IS 374:2019 and IS 302-2-80, as amended from time to time.

Manufacturers are obligated to submit test reports using the provided format in Annexure A, detailing the results of sample tests. This comprehensive framework aims to enhance energy efficiency in electric ceiling type fans, contributing to the nation’s broader sustainability goals.
