The Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has notified the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) Regulation, 2023. These regulations were notified on 1st August, 2023 and are effective from that date.

It may be recalled that the UGMEB had published the draft CBME Regulations on 23rd June, 2023 and had invited comments on it from the public.

After consideration of comments received, the UGMEB has finally published the Competency Based Medical Education Regulation, 2023.

The new Graduate Medical Education Regulations attempts to stand on the shoulder of the contributions and the efforts of resource persons, teachers and students. It intends to take the learner to provide health care to the evolving needs of the nation and the world.

The thrust in the new regulations is continuation and evolution of thought in medical education making it more learner-centric, patient-centric, gender- sensitive, outcome -oriented and environment appropriate. The result is an outcome driven curriculum which conforms to global trends.

The undergraduate medical education program is designed with a goal to create an “lndian Medical Graduate” (IMG) possessing requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and responsiveness, so that she or he may function appropriately and effectively as a physician of first contact of the community while being globally relevant.
