The Global Food Regulators Summit 2023 is set to take place in Delhi, marking its first-ever occurrence as a G20 event. Organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), the summit is scheduled to be held on 20th and 21st July, 2023 in New Delhi. A press release was issued on the preparation of the summit on 17th July, 2023.
Inaugurating the summit’s preparations the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare unveiled the summit’s logo, accompanied by the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare highlighted the significance of the summit, stating, “This is the first time the summit is being held outside Rome, Italy. The Global Food Regulators Summit will bring focus on the crucial aspect of food safety, which needs as much attention as food security.” He emphasized that the summit would serve as a platform for more than 40 countries’ food regulators to collaborate and work in unison. The event is set to witness the participation of representatives from 30 international organizations and 25 esteemed international research institutes and universities.
With a vision of harmonizing global food safety standards, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and ensuring the provision of safe and high-quality food for consumers worldwide, the Union Minister expressed his confidence in the summit’s success through collective efforts.
The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, hailed the Global Food Regulators Summit as a crucial and relevant event. He emphasized that the summit aligns perfectly with the theme of India’s G20 Presidency – “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” He reiterated India’s rich tradition of “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah,” underscoring the summit’s role in furthering the country’s commitment to global well-being.
The Global Food Regulators Summit 2023 will serve as an indispensable platform for participants to discuss cohesive networks on food safety and regulatory aspects, exchange best practices, and explore collaborative work areas to establish synergies among global regulators and agencies. Stakeholders representing diverse countries, international organizations, and national entities are expected to actively participate in the summit.
The event will witness the attendance of food regulators from G20 member countries, exemplifying their dedication to enhancing food safety systems and regulatory frameworks. Renowned international organizations and food research institutes, including the WHO, CODEX, FAO, BfR (Germany), Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (USA), Health Canada, the Australian Institute of Food Safety and Technology, among others, will contribute their expertise and perspectives to the discussions.
National stakeholders from various departments and organizations such as the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Food Processing, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, APEDA, MPEDA, EIC, and others will actively contribute to the summit, showcasing their commitment to ensuring safe and high-quality food for all.
Among the groundbreaking initiatives to be launched during the summit is “Food-o-Copoeia,” a comprehensive collection of food category-wise monographs, serving as a single-point reference for all applicable standards for specific product categories.
Additionally, the summit will witness the launch of the common regulators platform “SaNGRAH” (Safe food for Nations: Global food Regulatory Authorities Handbook). It is a comprehensive database of food regulatory authorities from 76 countries, presenting their mandates, food safety ecosystems, testing facilities, and contact details.
