The National Medical Commission (NMC) has held an emergency anti-ragging meeting to address the suicide committed by a PG Resident Doctor. This meeting was held on 11th October 2023 and a press release on the meeting was issued on the same day.
It may be recalled that the suicide by the 2nd year PG medical student was allegedly due to sexual harassment, physical and mental abuse and toxicity by her professor and seniors at the Anesthesia department.
The NMC has urged all medical institutions to foster a safe and supportive environment for students and pledges to take stringent actions against any form of harassment within the medical community.
Additionally, the following decisions were taken at the meeting:
- Detailed report to be submitted by the college on the incident
- State Directorate of Medical Education and Research to hold independent inquiry into the incident and submit its report within 15 days
- Pending inquiry of the incident by the NMC’s Anti-Ragging Committee and all matters of the medical college under consideration in NMC will be put on hold
