The  National Medical Commission (NMC) Policy and Coordination Division issued a public notice on 08th February, 2024, regarding hostel accommodation for postgraduate medical students.

It references the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulation (PGMER), 2023, which mandates that medical colleges must provide suitable residential accommodation to post-graduate students, although it is not compulsory for the students to reside in the hostel.

The notice highlights that despite the absence of such a provision in the previous PGMER of 2000, numerous complaints have been received from post-graduate students alleging that medical colleges are enforcing them to stay in the hostel and levying substantial charges.

The NMC emphasized that this behavior is a violation of the PGMER, 2023, and directed all medical colleges and institutes to adhere to the2023 regulation. Failure to comply would attract potential consequences, including monetary penalties, reduction of seats, or stoppage of admissions, as outlined in the PGMER, 2023.
