As a result of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the landscape of Post Graduate Medical Education underwent adjustments to accommodate the evolving circumstances. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has now issued a notice informing the public on the start of the Academic Session 2023-24 for the Super Specialty Courses. This notice is dated December 20, 2023.

The Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations-2000 (PGMER-2000) traditionally dictates the commencement date of academic sessions and the duration of postgraduate courses. However, the impact of the pandemic on the initiation of academic sessions for postgraduate courses was significant. This prompted a re-evaluation of timelines outlined in the PGMER-2000.

For the current academic session, spanning 2023-24, a notable adjustment has been made for Post Graduate Super Special Courses. Despite the disruptions of the past three years, the academic session for these courses commenced on November 25, 2023. This proactive step aims to bring a degree of normalcy to the academic calendar and provide aspiring postgraduate students with the opportunity to pursue advanced medical studies.

Moreover, recognizing the need for flexibility in the current circumstances, the authorities have extended the last date for admission to Post Graduate Super Special Courses to December 31, 2023. This extension seeks to accommodate potential candidates and streamline the admission process amid the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic.

The decision to commence the academic session for Post Graduate Super Special Courses and extend the admission deadline reflects a commitment to the continuity of medical education while considering the exceptional circumstances brought about by the global health crisis. Officials emphasize the importance of maintaining the quality of education and ensuring that aspiring medical professionals can pursue their chosen paths, despite the hurdles presented by the pandemic.
